Kristian Touborg’s practice brings forth a renewed subjectivity in painting, fusing digital technology with sensual materiality, and poetic image-making with posthuman myth.

Kristian Touborg is a Danish artist whose practice explores the intersection of digital technology and traditional painting, creating works that fuse sensual materiality with poetic imagery and posthuman mythology. His artistic practice explores the intersection of digital technology and traditional painting, bringing forth a renewed subjectivity in contemporary art. He fuses the sensual materiality of paint with digital manipulation, creating compositions that move fluidly between abstraction and figuration, intimacy and estrangement, resilience and vulnerability. Touborg’s works are marked by their striking use of vivid brushwork, industrial textures, and soft, luminous materials such as silk and metal, creating a unique visual language that combines contemporary media with traditional craft.

Touborg’s work embodies a unique tension, where figures flicker into landscapes and painterly marks glitch like broken pixels. His pieces often evoke a quiet radiance, as though they are viewed through the light of a screen or seen in a dreamlike state. Figures flicker into landscapes, painterly marks glitch like broken pixels, and textures shift between the tactile and the digital. Touborg’s works navigate worlds shaped by memory, technology, and decay, reflecting the fragility of modern existence. In this space, beauty is found not in permanence but in impermanence, transformation, and the ongoing process of change. Rather than presenting a sense of finality or completion, his works exist in states of flux – reflecting the quiet, ever-shifting nature of contemporary life, situated at the intersection of new media and classical techniques.

Touborg earned his MA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and has received recognition from the Danish Arts Foundation, including a working grant to support his practice. His first institutional solo exhibition, Trust in Mortals, was held at Kunsthal Kongegaarden in 2022. Since then, his work has been shown in numerous prestigious solo exhibitions, including Fringes of Reflection at Golsa in Oslo (2023), Dandelion at Newchild in Antwerp (2023), Light Blue Noise at Lundgren Gallery in Palma de Mallorca (2022), and Fluttering the Void at Berlinskej Model in Prague (2022). His works have also been presented in numerous group exhibitions at major institutions and art fairs, including Art Brussels (2023, 2024), Frieze No. 9 Cork Street (2024), NADA at The Hole in New York (2023), Vibrant Escape: Ode to Summer at WOAW Gallery in Hong Kong (2023), and Market Art Fair in Stockholm (2023).

Touborg’s work is held in the permanent collections of several renowned institutions, including the HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Randers Kunstmuseum, the Blake Byrne Collection, Statens Kunstfond, and the X Museum. His pieces have been included in prominent exhibitions such as Phantasmagoria at LBF Contemporary in London (2024), Merged Echoes at Carvalho Park in New York (2023), and Kaleidoscope of (Hi)stories: Ukrainian Art 1912–2023 at Albertinum in Dresden (2023).

Figuration & Algoritms, 2017
Issues of borrowing, stealing and copyrights are central to Touborg in his works that consist of both painterly effort and industrially produced and processed visual material collaged into the works. Figuration and Algorithms make up a cultural mesh, or perhaps even a mess, through which private memories, the negotiation of artistic intention and creativity, as well as the algorithmic prioritising of our online presence is filtered.

Figuration and Algorithms is his second solo show at Galerie Mikael Andersen.
